Hi

I just installed the latest verion of the Security Update on my Mac and now I'm having all sorts of problems. My browsers crash consistantly (i've written this e-mail a few times), I try to open AIM but it says "The application could not be lauched because of a shared library error: "9<AOL Instant Messenger (SM)><CarbonLib><CFMPrive_System><>" I get a similar message when opening Internet Explorer, ProTools, Adobe Illustrator...well basically everything I open. What can I do to solve it?

Thanks,

Chad

For AIM, you can switch to iChat. Internet Explorer is no longer supported by Microsoft. Switch to another browser. I hear that Safari and Firefox are pretty good. I can't help you with ProTools and Adobe Illustrator. However, I strongly recommend that you disable any haxies that you have installed.

I shouldn't have to switch. I want my computer back to how it was. I use Safari and FireFox but now they crash all the time.

A few suggestions

You could try re-applying the Security Update. Remove it's receipt first;

/Library/Receipts/SecUpd2007-001Ti.pkg [note that this is the Library folder at the root level of your startup drive]
============================================

Try dragging the following files to the trash:

com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches)
Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library)
Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/)
com.apple.ATS (a folder in /Library/Caches/)
Files that start with com.apple.LaunchServices (in /Library/Caches)
You will be prompted to enter your administrator password when dragging these files to the trash. Rstart after moving them to the trash.

Download and run the Combo Update for the version of OS X you're running.

quick question before i go through all of that. I went to download the security update and try again like you stated but it only had stuff for 10.4. I'm still running 10.3 on my Mac. Could the software update have given me the 10.4 and caused those problems??

I tried to do all that you suggested with no success. So am i pretty much screwed now?

Did you try creating a new user and logging in as that user?

If so, did the problems still occur?

If you try/tried this and still have the same errors,
Back up any files/apps you do not want to lose
and reinstall the OS using the archive and install
method.
