Welcome to the Forum! :)

If you right-click (ctrl-click) on a file or folder you can choose "create archive of <filename>" to make a zip file. I am not 100% sure if this does work without problems in windows, but you can try.

Whattabout Stuffit 6.0?

lol, you mean 8.0 right?

There is a freeware part of the stuffit suite already with your mac, it's in the utilities folder called StuffIt Expander. It will expand lots of files. The Deluxe Suite of Stuffit has all sorts of compression things (tarball, gnuzip etc). Just use the StuffIt Expander when you're online and it will beg you to go to the Stuffit site.

zandalf - how new is you Mac, if its brand new it likely has panther on it but if its a few months old it may not, if it does not have OS X 10.3 aka. Panther you cannot right-click or ctrl-click to create zip archives.

And yes, the right-click (control-click) archives are completely compatible with Winsnore - at least with 98, ME and XP

an 2K, of course.

if you don't have Panther and still want to zip files for free, you can open a Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app), type 'zip ' (with the space at the end but without the quotes) and drag the file/folder to the Terminal window. Then hit 'enter' and you're done.

Hello everyone,
thanks for the great help, mine is a 2nd hand mac so it is running on OS X 10 and i don think i have Panther, btw, where can i download Panther? and can i unzip winzip files send by my friend? his platform is window xp :( .

To check what OS version you have you'll need to go under the apple menu and goto about this mac, it will say what you have, ill post a screenshot of the window you should get. Now if the version # isnt 10.3.x than you dont have panther, to answer the question about where can you d/l; panther you cant you have to buy a copy from apple. Apple releases a major update every year and its definetly worth the $100 because it encompasses UI, speed, and overall user experience improvements amongst other things. Now to your question about unzipping files from a freind with WinXP, yes Stuffit Expander(which you have included on you drive) will extract those files. If you dont have panther and you need a zipping solution a quick search on versiontracker pulled up this.
I havent tested it but it looks like a set of drag+drop scripts but if those dont work for you theres lots of other good freeware out there on sites like versiontracker.com and macupdate.com. Hope this helps!
