I'm considering trying out os x.
I've been using redhat for years now, and wondered how os x works.

When you purchase os x, do you get unlimited upgrades, or do you have to purchase upgrades, like puma to jaguar?

I see something called apple server for sale on apple's site.
I also see that there is samba for os x. What's the advantage of apple server over samba? Sounds like they do the same thing.

Depending on the upgrade, it may or may not be free. The upgrade to 10.1 from 10.0 was free (or $19.95 to get a cd shipped from apple). The upgrade to 10.2 was not free. The next upgrade, who knows.

The server version of OS X is really not that much different then the desktop version as far as the core goes. But the licensing is different on server, and server also comes with alot of tools that for managing server software that really isn't needed on a desktop. Can you serve files and webpages, etc on the desktop version, sure. OS X server actually uses samba for it's file sharing with windows boxes.
