New user with mail.app smtp problems

Hi all

I hope you can help, I work for a company that has just upgraded from OS9! They were using Outlook express as the mail client. Now they want to use Mail.app.

I set up the accounts, but the smtp server keeps saying the passwords are not correct? I have loaded Entourage onto my mac and all of the accounts work OK sending and receiving. I have tried the use the mail servers name and IP address but still the same. I have tried all of the password formats - even though our provider says it should just be name and password.

I hope you can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Mike

Mike, do you perhaps have different passwords for your incoming mail
server and your outgoing SMTP server? For example, I get my mail from
pop.vt.edu, but outgoing mail goes through the isp's smtp.comcast.net.
Different user name and passwords for incoming and outgoing.

I set the smtp information by clicking the "server settings" button, which
brings up a separate dialog box.

Try deleting the accounts you setup in Mail.
Open Keychain Access (Utility folder) and see if there are any entries for the Mail app or the servers you setup for Mail and delete them.
Then try setting up one of the accounts in Mail again and see if it works.

Try trashing the 'com.apple.mail.plist' in User/Library/Preferences and setting up again.

How do you know that the SMTP servers require a password? My commercial ISP's SMTP server does not--only the POP3 server. Try SMTP without authentication.

Your servers should be agnostic about which email client you are using. The easiest way to set up is to write down the settings used with Outlook Express. Type those into Mail. The only difference is that OE generally doesn't worry about ports, use the default ports in Mail.

Tried the plist and still no luck. Also confirmed we DO require a password(same as login), and I have tried it with and without authentification on?
