Newbie Questions, Part II

Hello there,

I'm a MacOSX newbie, so please bear with me...

Here are some questions:

(1) I installed Adium, but now can't seem to find it... How do I make Finder, search everything?

(2) Is there a tree browser / file manager program such as Windoze Explorer for the OSX?

(3) Whenever, I use Entourage, Safari, and IE, all the fonts look blurry (pixelated)... How can I fix this problem? My resolution is 1280 x 854, with a million colors... I am using a top of the line PowerBook. I installed all the updates and also installed the fonts with MS Office 2004, and everything still is very hard to read.

(4) How do I set up Entourage to automatically display pictures (which are included in my e-mails)?

(5) How do I import my Favorites (from my WinXP machine) into IE, Safari, or FireFox?

I have more questions, but don't want to bombard anyone...

With thanks!

Cheers,

Unnsse

P.S. MacOSX rocks!

There's a search field in the Finder window's toolbar (top of the window).

Click on the magifying glass if you want to restrict the domain of the search.

How do you mean "blurred"? I've never had a problem with fonts on my PB.

By blurred, I mean that the fonts are hard to read.... They seem pixelated...

With Finder, how do you specify it to search the entire hard drive?

With thanks!

in the top right hand corner in safari and Finder you will see a blank space with a little magnifying glass, type some text in there and you'll find what your looking for. To specify the entire hd click everywhere. Also by the fonts are they too Anti-aliased? If so go to your system preferences > Appearance > and at the bottom you'll find some options for text. I also run on your res but im on a 17" crt just click some of those preferences to see how it goes, but if your not satisfied change it to 1024x768 or the one above that.

onother solution for your search is to type [cmd] + [f] in finder, and specify where you want to search... the possible problem you have encountered installing udium is that you have downloaded the .dmg file, mounted it but not copied adium to your application folder.... it happened sometimes to me when i bought my first mac... :)
in entourage, click in the top menu on entourage, then go to preference (the shortcut is [cmd] + [,]) go to view and check the box with 'view images....'

2 things
get used to the finder and the way to navigate the filesystem through it first. It's always good to know where things are when you HAVE TO get to them. I know, this is probably all a no-brainer.

the big tip:
download quicksilver herehere
It does TONS of cool things, but don't worry about them now.
once you install it (drag it into the Applications directory) and run it (the first time) it'll index your hard drive for all apps, bookmarks, files, etc.
it'll tell you how to invoke it (it used to be APPLE SPACE, but I think the default has been changed. just read the initial launch screen and it'll tell you what the invoke key stroke is)
so now that you know the keystroke, do that, and start typing the name of the application you want to launch. (use the up/down arrows if it's not the first returned in the list) and then hit enter when you hilite the one you want.
bam, launches the app for you just like that.

if you want to learn more about the features that come with quicksilver, either read the forums from the page linked above, or here's a great 10 minute tutorial:

More details: To search everywhere, open a Finder window. For example, double-click on your hard drive. Left-click (or click if you have only one button) on the magnifying glass. You should get a pop-up menu. Select everywhere.

To show pix in Entourage, go to Entourage (menu) > Mail and News Preferences>View (tab) and click the appropriate box. I believe that's what you're looking for anyway.

Holler if you need any more info.
