no 'accounts' system preference?

boi

official breaker of macs.
i only have 'my account'. is this normal? if so, how do i change the login setting that lets me type the user name that i login as (in this case, root).

You will only have access to the all-users Accounts prefpane if you are an administrator. There is a chance that this does not include root, as the unix system is not intended to be used in root mode.
Remember, root is a tool to be used only when necessary.

As long as you still have your admin account that you created when you set up the machine, you should be able to log in as this user and have access to the accounts pane.

If you've gone and deleted all your accounts and are using the machine as root (a sure fire way to leave your system vulnerable not only to user mistakes but to malicious attack) then you've really gone and kicked yourself in the head. There is hopefully a way around this via the terminal and/or netinfo.

i did the thing where i reinstalled OS X keeping my old library. the computer wouldn't boot any more, and this was the only option. this is the only user on my machine now. it says my user name is "Matthew Wilson" (my name), not "root" (which i presume it would if i'm logged in as root, right?).

any ideas what happened?

One thing you can try is to boot off the X installer CD and run the password reset utitlity to unlock one of your administrator accounts.

Yes. Rhino's suggestion is probably the best solution.

And then, once done, you should run a repair priveleges in disk utility just to undo any muck-ups you've made using the system as root.

And don't use root at all for day-to-day tasks. In fact, it should be quite easy to do everything with your mac without logging in as root EVER.

i'm logged in as root? how did i do that? whaaat happeneeddd? i didn't log into root on purpose as far as i know. i don't think i'm actually logged in as root. anyway, i'll try doing that. i'm confused as to what's going on here.

okay, i ran the password reset thingie, and nothing is locked. my admin account is just fine and dandy and that's the account that i'm logged in as. everything's all well and normal, except that there's no 'accounts' preference pane, just 'my account'.
i need to log in as root to empty my trashcan. it's got my 'previous system' folder from my reinstallation in it and i don't have the priveleges to empty it.

I have the same problem. I am logged in as the original account administrator and I have no "Accounts" preferences pane. Allthough, if I log in as the "root" user then I do have an "Accounts" preferences pane.

Just to clerify I do not use "root" on a daily basis. But if I need to change my "accounts" I do use "root".

On a similar but different note, have two "Internet" preference panes, one is filed under "Internet & Network", and the other is located under "Other". This might not be a problem?

i wish i could login as root to edit the accounts thing... as it stands i can only click on my name to log in (therefore i can't type in 'root' to login as root). i need to get into 'accounts' to even change that setting =P.

boi,

Actually I think you should be able to log in as root with out using "accounts".
You have to go to NetInfo Manager" located in the Utilites Folder, in the Apps Folder.

Once you open NetInfo Manager. Click on Security (at the top) and then Authenticate, and then click on Enable root user. You might need to establish a root user first (create a password, etc)?

After you have enable a root user logout and then login as "root" and then type your password for root.

When you have finished using "root" logout and then login as your regular adiminstrator user and be sure to "Disable Root User" inside the NetInfo Manager. This is Important.

Like Symponix's says do not use "root" on a day-to-day basis. it is imporant to disable "root" after you use it.

boi,
Check out genghiscohen advice in the thread callled "duplicate prefpanes...". I would add a link to it but I am not exactly sure how to do it.
