No focus on mailboxes in Mail - aaargh!

I am used to having my mailbox drawer open (shift+command+M) when using Mail. What I don't like is that when using the keyboard, I can't set the focus on the mailboxes, so that I can just use the cursors to go up or down in the mailboxes. When I hit the tab key, the focus only alternates between the message list, the message preview and the search field. When using the mouse to click on a mailbox, the focus immediately jumps to the message list! :-(

Is there any way I can set & leave the focus on the mailboxes? Am I the only person who is annoyed by that?
 
ok now lets make this sort of clear here... HOWTOs are articles written by people that know how to do the stuff not posts written by people who want to know how to do stuff. same goes with FAQ. :p
