No identd in Panther?

Has anyone figured out how to get identd working in Panther? It appears that Apple saw fit not to include it, and certain IRC servers won't allow you to log into them without having your identd active.

Anyone know why Apple left it out? Seems rather odd to me.

There has been a tip in maxosxhints to start fakeidentd from /System/Library/StartupItems (the tip says to start it from xinetd but that doesn't work, you must start it as a standalone daemon from the command line of from a startup item).
