No Mountable Drive

I'm a new mac user, having purchased a used powerbook G4 (titanium). I'm getting an error an time I try to mount a .dmg file stating that there is no mountable drive. I've done a complete reinstall of the OS X Panther, and it didn't fix the problem.
I don't have any files to save, and I will purchase a new OS X if it will make a difference. Please help!

If you cannot mount the .dmg file, there is something wrong with the file, not (necessary) with your operating system. You can verify this by making another .dmg file and see how it behaves. To create a disk image file, use the Disk Utility program.

Thanks for the reply. I can't mount any .dmg file. I've tried several, and no luck whatsoever. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
