No screen when booting from anything else than HD

Not sure whether this goes here or in the Classic category but I'm gonna give it a shot here...

I have a PowerMac G4/400 AGP Graphics running OS 9.2.2.
I want to install OS X 10.4 on it because I want to use the machine as a home server. I have a retail version of the Tiger DVD.

Here's my problem: the machine boots into OS 9.2.2 and everything seems to be working fine. I have an EIZO Flexscan F77S CRT monitor connected to it which works normal under OS 9.2.2. Normally at boottime it showes me the Appian graphics card logo for a few seconds after which the screen turns grey and the OS 9 logo appears. I can also read the OS X install DVD in the optical drive.
But when I boot from the install DVD, I can hear that the machine is reading the DVD but the screen doesn't come on. After a few minutes, the screen goes into standby. The same thing happens when I boot into Target Disk Mode or when I try to run the Firmware update. Also, when booting into TDM my PowerBook freezes when selecting the G4's HD.

Here's what I already did: I zapped the PRAM, tried to update the firmware to 4.2.8 but doesn't work. Removed the battery for about half an hour. Reset the Cuda chip and use another optical drive. Also, the Command-option-o-f gave me no prompt and pressing C at boottime didn't work.

Do I have a broken G4 or should I just get another monitor, anyone any ideas?

Doesn't sound at all good. You've run hardware test on the G4? Why would anything be wrong with the monitor??

I don't think there would be anything wrong with the monitor either, but sometimes you here the strangest things about Macs and third party hardware...

I tried to run a hardware test, but since there's nothing on the screen when I boot from anything else than the OS9.2 on the HD I can't run it.
