not being able to open files after downl

i download files from the internet and they install but when i try and open them, it says please choose application and nothing opens it.

do i need to download something in order to fix this problem, please help.

Can you give an example of something that you have downloaded? What's the name of the file? If you have downloaded a Windows executable, which has a file name that ends in .exe - then that typically won't work on a Mac.
 
hello I am having the same problem I tried to download firefox I see the icon my desktop but when i click on it an internet explorer window pops up and u see the beach ball thats it?
 
If the download was a .dmg file, right click on it > > Get Info > in the pop-up window choose Open with > diskimagmounter.app from the list. If the diskimagemounter.app is not listed, choose Other... then navigate to Macintosh HD > System > Library > Core Services to choose diskimagemounter.app. Click on the Change All... button so all .dmg files will be opened with diskimagemounter.app
