Until recently, it worked fine when inserting a DVD. No longer plays it automatically.
Also, no DVD player showing on list anymore in Find
Please advise how to restore.

You need to give us a bit more information. What brand/model is the DVD player? Internal or external? What version OS are you running on? Did this happen after an update of the OS?

Just a simple USB plug in external DVD unit. It worked fine until recently. Tray opens/ closes but no longer reads or shows the video.
I have Monterey OS 12.7.
2017 model. macbook Air

A few pointers:
  • Power Requirements: External DVD drives, especially Apple SuperDrives, can require more power than a standard USB port provides. Use a high-quality USB-C to USB-A adapter directly into the Mac, or a powered USB hub.
  • Insert a Disc: The drive might not appear in Finder or be recognized by the system until a disc is inserted.
  • Locate DVD Player: If it doesn't open automatically, navigate to System >Library >CoreServices >Applications and open DVD Player.app.
  • Alternative Player: If the default app fails, download VLC Media Player, which is reliable for external drives.
  • Check System Report: Go to  > About This Mac > System Report > Disc Burning to confirm if the Mac sees the hardware
