I am trying to create a computer-to-computer network between my Mac Mini and a MacBook using Airport.

Using System Preferences, I have clicked on File Sharing in 'Sharing' and have attempted to create a new network in 'Network', but an error message keeps coming up.

With regards to password protection, I believe my 10 digit hexadecimal code is OK (for 40-bit WEP).

Any suggestions?

So, neither of these computers is connected to the Internet? If one was, you could share its connection to the other to create a network. If both are connected to the Internet, why do you need a computer-to-computer network? What are you trying to accomplish?

Good question indeed.

I want to be able to sync my data on my Mac Mini with my data on my MacBook.

Not just MobileMe data, but files, images etc.

P.S. The Mac MIni is connected to the Internet via a ethernet/router.

So, if this isn't a wireless router, I would connect the MacBook to it as well. If it is, then connect that works, too. You don't have to create a computer-to-computer network to share files between computers that are both present on a local network.

Well, you're using Snow Leopard on at least the mini. Once file sharing is active on one system, it should appear as a local volume in the Finder sidebar of the other one, assuming you have the Shared sidebar section is active in Finder preferences.
