Number pad not working and Mouse keys are OFF

My iMac is running OS X verion 10.6.8, and in some applications, such as Excel,
my number pad will only serve as a cursor control pad. Opening Universal Access and toggling Mouse Keys has no effect. I have read that the clear key might act as a num lock key but it does not, nor does F6. I'm sure there is something simple that I am missing, but what?

When Universal Access has the Mouse Keys and Sticky Keys disabled by clicking the Off button on each page, you can still turn them on temporarily by hitting the Shift Key 5 times or the Option Key 5 times. Hitting them 5 time more should turn it all off.

Have you got the Sticky Keys/Mouse Keys boxes ticked?

The Sticky Keys and Mouse Keys are off. Always have been, so the glitch would seem to be elsewhere.

To clarify, I have experimented with toggling the sticky keys and the mouse keys, to no avail. I have now returned them to the off position, and turned off the options of tapping the shift and control keys five times to toggle them. None of this has affected the operation of the number pad. So something else is amiss, clearly.

Update on my problem: I spoke with Apple tech support, and they say that its an Excel problem, and I will need to take it up with Microsoft.

OK. For the record, for the sake of the next poor soul trying to get their number pad working: hold the shift key and tap the clear key (above the 7, where the num lock key would be on an IBM keyboard.) Toggles between number pad and cursor control, just like the num lock!
