Odd movie format.

Uber Nothing
I have downloaded a movie that has the following specs:

Video: WMV3 / 0x33564D57, 1280x720

Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5:1, 384 kb/s

I've tried MPlayer OS X 2, ffmpegX, VLC, Quicktime, and that really crappy version of Windows Media 9. VLC and Quicktime (with Flip4Mac pluggins) manage to play the audio, but not the video.

In VLC, I get the following error message:

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

What should I doooooo???

Sounds like the movie uses Microsoft's DRM system. If it does, there's no way to play it on a Mac.

Actually, there's one more thing you could try: the latest nightly builds (read: unofficial, probably buggy versions) of VLC can play WMV3 video. If the problem isn't due to DRM, then it might work.

You can get the latest nightly builds at http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx/ (the bottom ones are newer)

You're awesome Mikuro. The latest nightly build will play my file.

(Oh, and I'm using VLC to export the file to an MP4 to use with iTunes.)

yes, windows DRM is totally unplayable on mac as yet. and, as it stands, it looks like M$ are going to continue to take DRM infection to it's Event Horizon.

ladies and gentlemen, WMP11.

That article is scary as hell. I can't believe that MS can legally do that... in fact, I doubt they can! I'm just glad to be sitting here on my Mac... shese, after reading the bit about TiVo media being deleted after 3 days, the iTV doesn't look so bad.
