I have had the new system for some time now (love it!) but there is an odd issue with system sounds that I have been slowly isolating which is very annoying. It happens throughout the system, but is most noticable in Mail.
After a fresh boot or long, all mail sounds work as expected for sending and receiving mail, including sounds associated with specific rules. After a while, however, some of the sounds cease, sent mail especially but also received mail sounds. The mail is actually being sent, but no sound comes out, and I may or may not have receipt sounds. If I stop and restart mail (or log out/in or reboot) then the sounds start working again! For while.
What I hav enot been able to figure out is what is causing the sounds to start messing up in the first place! And this only happens on the 24" Core 2 Duo iMac. As far as I can tell it does not happen on the G4 iMac, the G5 iMac or the 20" Core Duo iMac.
Note that when this happens the system is still capable of producing sounds, and other alerts from other applications may or may not produce sound. iTumes still plays music and so forth.
I also notice oddities such as the sound cutting in and out when playing Civ4, but that does not really bother me.
On a similar note, from time to time the HIDE command in some or all programs, with the command being greyed out. Again, stopping and starting the application usually clears this, but not always. Sometimes I have to quit several programs to clear the condition. Sometimes if I leave the application alone the HIDE command becomes available again later. It is as if some activity on the computer is blocking this command for one or more other applications, and when that condition clears (I have not isolated a specific cause), then the command becomes available again.
I have tried erasing the sounds plist file, but that had no effect -- and recall that I have indicated that stopping/starting, logout/login or reboot clears both issues for some indeterminate amount of time.
Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this? And on the 24" iMac only?
