Off-brand WiFi Router Hates Secure Sites...

Hey Hey -

In a blatant fit of "CHEAP" I purchased an AT&T "Plug and Share" 54 mbps Wi-Fi Router for my girlfriend's new apartment.

I had no idea that AT&T made Wi-Fi products, and, well, I which I hadn't ever gotten hip to that. This may be what I get for not opting for the AE...

Basically, the router works and broadcasts fine, it's just very selective in what it lets you see...

The issue is with accessing secure sites, such as hotmail.com or amazon.com. Either the router won't let you access the sites, or it'll take 15-20 minutes just to load the page.

Is this an issue inherent in the router, or something that could be fixed on the computer??

Many thanks,

N.

Hi noahsnyc and welcome to the forum.
I don't really think this problem lies on the router unless you get a https site properly loaded when not using the router. Did you try different browsers?

Yep - tried everything from IE to Safari to Firefox even and they all like to lock-up around secure connections. Https sites and everything else loads just swell when I'm coming directly from the DSL/Ethernet...

Thanks

Then it looks like time for a new router.

Thanks for that one, buddy...

Yeah, seriously, it does look like if this isn't going to work then I better just buckle and get an Airport Express...just wanted to know if there was anyway around the obvious port-blocking mechanism...

does the router have a web-interface like others? If so, try to turn off any security option. This is just for testing.. Also take a closer look at the firewall settings.

Yep - fussed around with the web-interface for a hour yesterday.

All the security was disabled, as was the built-in firewall. Obviously, OS X isn't using it's firewall against me, since it works fine coming directly from the DSL modem.

I have a hunch it may have something to do with blocking port 443, which is a really common secure site port...wish I knew what to do next...!

Thanks,

N.

Are you sure you turned off the built-in firewall from the router? I am asking, since I can't do this with my dlink router. I can only open certain ports. Did you try to add that port to the "irgnor" list of the firewall?
Eventhough the built-in macosx firewall works fine when plugged to the dsl directly, did you also turn it off?
