Office 2004 Freezes when typing accents

Hi - we have a strange problem a few weeks ago Microsoft Word 2004 started freezing whenever a a letter with an accent (in Spanish) is typed. Otherwise everything works fine.

Has anyone seen this before?

The OS is 10.5.6 the machine is a PPC G5.
