Office 2004 won't display pictures in doc file created in office 2003 for windows

Hi, I'm a tech at a college & we're having an issue with Office 2004 for Mac. Word is not displaying images embedded in documents. A professor's assistant created a document in Word 2003 with a picture letterhead. The professor's mac, and our two macs down here all just show black boxes where the letterhead should be. I've looked around and haven't been able to find a fix. I've already unclicked Image Placeholders in Preferences, but that didn't work.
