OH MAN! Escape Velocity resources in OS X!

My last thread about this was, by some reason, closed, so I'm trying once more;
I opened the system reource file HIToollox.rsrc in HexEdit, copied the contents of the data fork to the resource fork, and opened it in ResKnife.
Then I took a look at the resources, and... there I found the same kind of resources as in plug-in's for a game called Escape Velocity! Weird!
Take a look at the names of the resources, many of them are the same!

desc -descripiton of ships and outfits
flet -space ship fleets
govt -governments
junk -special stuff
misn -mission
nebu -nebulas
oops -(not sure, but I think it was News or anything like that)
outf -spce ship outfits
pers -persons
ship -ships

And some more, many of them are templates from a game called Escape Velocity, in a Mac OS X resource file! THIS is what I call an easter egg!

Can anyone explain THIS?...

I just checked and all of those resources you named are NOT there. I don't know which file you opened, but I'm editing the HIToolbox.rsrc, and they are definitely not there. Maybe they're gone in OS X 10.1.2, but I have a feeling you're opening the wrong file or something.

Maybe because you have the game installed and the game has modified the resource because it needed to havve it that way?

Nope, it's not installed on this computer, and they only show up in the HIToolbox file, not in e.g. extras.rsrc...
However, they don't appear when I'm using ResEdit...
What IS this?

I think your copy of ResKnife is broken. Those resources do not exist in HIToolbox.

BTW, isn't ResKnife an incomplete app? The last version I saw wasn't even a "beta" build yet. I wouldn't trust ResKnife at this point.

Has anyone ported or have plans to port it to OS 10? I love that game and miss playing it on my PowerBook (I don't have OS 9 installed, so no classic)! And are there any ResEdit-like apps for OS X?

The original Escape Velocity is not being ported, but Ambrosia will release EV: Nova as a Carbon app for both OS9 and OSX. It looks AWESOME. It's got totally new graphic and sound engines and a HUGE plot and universe.

Yeah, maybe, but where does these resources come from, then, eh?
THen they must be implemented in ResKnife or something, they doesn't appear in any other files

hey, back to the topic, what can this stuff be? Maybe it's somehing special with MY HIToolbox file, eh? ;)
At least they show up in HIToolbox.rsrc, and not in ANY other files I try, so, WHAT can it be? Seriously, I'm not kidding ;)
They must come from somewhere...

Okay, okay! :)

I opened my HIToolbox.rsrc in ResKnife 0.4d2 (is there a newer version?) and upon scrolling way down, I too found those templates. However, they do not appear in either ResEdit or Resorcerer 2.2, as you said before. Thus, I believe this to simply be a bug in ResKnife.

Don't think it's anything more. :p

Yope, I've tried to open it in RedEsit too, and, nothing there... so it must be ResKnife...

Then at least it is an easter egg in ResKnife ;) hehe
Why in h*** do they implement Escape Velocity templates in a OS X resource editor, then?... :D

No no no... it's not an OS X resource editor, it's a resource editor. All resources, even those in Escape Velocity. Resources themselves have nothing to do with OSX. They've been in forked files since HFS first arrived with the Mac. ResKnife is simply meant to be a native OSX replacement of ResEdit since Apple halted development on that years ago. Of course, it's not much of a replacement in its current state... :p

What do you mean? Resources are still used in OS X!

well, with "OS X resource editor" I meant a resource editor for OS X, not an editor to edit OS X resouces ;)

I'm just wandering WHERE those templated comes from...
