Old Dog, New Tricks

Androo

Yeah, Androo.
hey guys, i have an idea. I would like to turn my slow Blue Dalmation imac [G3 PowerPC processor: 600 Mhz.... 256 megs of RAM..... ATI Rage Pro....] into a sweet computer[G4 PowerPC processor: 800mhz-1.7ghz..... 512 megs of RAM..... GeForce FX].

The RAM part is easy, i'll just buy a RAM stick of 256megs, maybe i'll go for even more.

The hard parts that i am clueless about would be the video card and the processor. Would the video card work on my comp? And how the hell do i install a new processor?
Any tips and tutorials would be sweet, thnx in advance,
Androo.

Not alot (possibly any?) of options on Video or Processor upgrades for iMacs.

If it was a Rev A-D iMac, you could use:
http://www.sonnettech.com/product/harmoni_g3.html ($349)
http://www.powerlogix.com/products/iforce/index.html (discontinued)

If it was a slot-load 350-500mhz:
http://www.powerlogix.com/buynow/imac_service (discontinued, page gone)

Powerlogix and Sonnet were the only two companies I'm aware of that made any type of processor upgrade for iMacs, seems that Powerlogix has quit and Sonnet hasn't done anything more than one for the originals.

You might be better off unloading it on E-Bay the looking for a new/newer one. Chances are that if you did find a UC, VC, and the RAM you'd be spending around $600 or so. Looks like you could realistically get $400 to $600 selling what you got now.

For $1100 you could buy an iMac G4 1GHz/256MB/80GB/Combo/E/56K/15" - Refurbished from the Apple Store (includes 1yr warranty).

i pretty sure you wont be able to upgrade the video card at all and i havent seen anyting that fast i did via the mezzanine port in the revA imac and it was fun but not easy), as far as a processor you have the sites there, ebay could possibly yield a mac that already has upgrades if you can find someone who can be trusted.

For putting in a G4, click here. You won't get blazing speed (it's only a 500 Mhz processor), but you might be able to overclock it.

A new video card is out of the question unless you know how to reverse engineer solder.

mdnky, that first link was helpful.... but i already have 600 mhz lol
maybe if there's a similar product that works in an imac, and its a G4, that'd be sweet

Sorry Androo but it seems there are no longer any G3 upgrades over 600 MHz and the G4s ones top out at 500 MHz. And there are absolutely no video upgrades.

Mdnky has the best suggestion, trade up.
