old messages appearing in mail inbox randomly at startup

I can not figure out why random old messages from folders in mail keep appearing in the inbox as unread (read long ago or not)each time I start up. I can't find this on the forum lists at all. Have you seen this? Can you help?

I am on a g5 dual 2.3 power pc running mail version 2.0.5.

I pop two servers fro my mail and have all my email accounts forwarded to these two addresses for simplicity.
