only gray screen on startup, no apple

when i start up my macbook pro i have the problem that nothing happens except the screen goes the familiar grey that it normally does except that no little apple logo appears in the centre, sometimes the computer will switch on without any problems but most of the time nothing happens.

the chime sounds still occurs but nothing apart from that and the grey screen. the computer also switches off really easily like as soon as i tap the power button.
 
Try booting up in Safe Mode by holding down a SHIFT key as you power on the machine. Safe Mode will check your hard drive and do a few other troubleshooting tasks, and it loads only the critical kernel extensions.

Please let us know if it boots successfully in Safe Mode.
