OnyX and the grey screen mystery!

Hello,

Last Thursday I set OnyX running on my iBook, but didn't have time for it to finish and closed my iBook (stupid I know!). OnyX resumed the next day ok and all appeared to be well.

Then I restarted my machine! Ooooops.

Couldn't get passed the grey screen with the spinning wheel (OS 10.3.8)

Restarted in FireWire Target mode and retrieved all my data.

Have had to resort to reformatting the hard disk (to zeroes). Shuts down and Restarts fine.

But when I try Cocktail, to make sure all is re-set and well. It hangs for ever (well, two hours) and I have powered down.

That's when it grey screens me again.

There can't be anything residing in the memory can there?

Has anyone got any good ideas (I've just demonstrated how bad my good ideas are!), other than me going back to pencil and paper?

Many thanks,

Chopper

Just found a similar problem and tried BOBW's solution of entering in Single-User mode and running fsck -f

It ran.

I got a message saying

....

keys out of order (4, 6225)

** Rebuilding Catalog B-tree
** The volume iBook could not be repaired

Not looking too good is it?
