Open Directory network login

I've been trying to get this working on and off for a while unsuccessfully.

What I wish to do is make accounts on the 10.3 Server in Workgroup Manager, then log in to the client computers with these accounts.

Does anyone know all the steps to get this working? The server manuals seem to go back on themselves.

Thanks,

Configure your server to be a Open Directory master, and create the accounts there. You will probably have to create a "home directories" share too.

Then, on each client machine, you need to bring up /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access, go to the rightmost tab (sorry, I forget what it's called) and add the server in question to the authentication path.

Then you need to go into system preferences, and make people type in both userid and password, rather than click an icon & type password.

Lastly, you may run into trouble if the client has a user with the same userid as the server does.

That's retty much what I've been doing. Tried the Contacts and the Authentication tab in Directory Services, but I can't get it to log on. I can see the user trying to log on in the password server log, but there is no error.
