Hello colleges,

I search for some answers with peoples who use Open Directory in they LAN.

We use GGit network + MAC & MAC PRO workstations with 3 G memory.Software we use Photoshop.
1.I make Open Directory with all USERS and everything work perfect but ... I have problems with SLOW working with Photoshop.I choose Photoshop scratch disk from local machine and for my acquaintance I think USER who is log with Open Directory don't use ALL network traffic to work but I see more slowest with Photoshop when I use OD users. What can be the problem ??!
-Network
-More detailed configurations

2.I want to use MAC OS X SERVER SOFTWARE UPDATE SERVER.
Can I make MAC clients to use this LOCAL server to update but when they log with local machine user. Some line to type IP / HOST address to my OS X SERVER SOFTWARE UPDATE SERVER and all Workstations to update LOCAL.
In linux i make it with DEBIAN Local Archive and all other linux box is updating via this server but in MAC im not very in touch.

Thank you for support

Maybe better move this thread to the SERVER area.

You can use software update server from 10.4. After starting (ignore all errors during start for at least 1 day, it takes a lot of time to get it started), you need to run a program to set the update server location. The program name = Software Update Enabler. There is a thread in the SERVER area covering this untility.

If y7ou use a local user for photoshop with a local file, how is performance in that situation. Network is very slow when temp files are moved across the network, most likely that is what is happening.

Good luck, Kees

Hello colleges,

Than you Kees for "Software Update Enabler" it's exactly what I need.

For OD and Photoshop.I write that i USE for TEMP local machine and in this case User use his workstation and use his profile desktop configurations ... everything from OS X SERVER OD but I don't know why when I log in to OD Photoshop is slower.
1st Log in local workstation user ... everything works fine
2nd Log in with OD user ... then Photoshop work Slower ---> i change the TEMP directory for Photoshop to use LOCAL HARD DISK.I understand that when user save something on his DESKTOP he use the OD Desktop who is on SERVER not on his.

I think this come from user preferences but it is slower and I test it with 6-7 users but in fact if I want all network to use OS X SERVER OD and put 100 Mac clients then I think the work will be more slower and I want to know from where come this problem to fix it.

Remember, with Open Directory, you can manage services through MCX at multiple levels. For example, instead of enabling use of specific Software Update Server locally on each account, you could manage it at the Machine level through Open Directory managed settings, so any user that logs into that machine will be bound to the machine based policies you define.

So, the Open Directory users that login...where are their homes actually stored? Is it a local home (/Users only), a Network home (data exists on an AFP server share only) or a Portable home (data exists locally in /Users and on an AFP share)?

Michael

Hello colleges,

Michael the home directory is on MAC server that run Open Directory in fact is network home and this is my idea the users use this net home via AFP and use network settings maybe from this come the slow bandwidth. But I need to use every account from different computers.
Example:
Some computer stop working the user go to other computer Log in with his Open Directory account and he have same setting for his software and work with no problems.
