OpenGL and 10.1.5

Hi... It's been a long time since I visited this forum, glad to see it's still active.
I have a problem with 10.1.5 (and all versions since 10.1.2). When I open up quake 3, it has *serious* problems. The menu is all white boxes with black stuff around them and when a map loads there's a sort of bizarre problem where all polygons in the direction I am pointing try to draw on top of each other (perhaps a ZBuffer issue?). I'm running on a dual 800, GF3, 1.2 GB ram. Latest vers of Q3.

If I replace a whole bunch of files with the ones from 10.1.2, Q3 works again. So, despite half a dozen emails to Apple about this issue over 3 versions of OS X, they still can't get OpenGL right. Sheesh.

Does anybody have a clue how to fix this? I was gonna buy AppleCare anyway, maybe I should do that now so that I can get the phone support.

I remember reading a thread about this sort of problem -- and I remember it saying that one potential cause of this problem is RAM in amounts greater than 1GB.

Try removing a stick or two of RAM and knocking it down below 1GB, like 896 or 768MB... see if that works. I'll bet it will.

I believe they're currently working on this problem in a future update of Quake.

I'm running Quake3Arena on 10.1.5 and I don't have any problems whatsoever. In fact, game play has sped up since 10.1.4. I also am running the most recent Quake3Arena for Mac OS X.

Yup... try it with two 512's, and if that doesn't work, try it with one 512 and one 128... or simply just one 512.

I don't know if it exhibits this problem with an even gig of RAM, but I am for sure that it will if RAM exceeds 1GB.

Well, that's rather unpleasant (notice how I avoided using the word "sucks"). At least I wont have to muck about in root replacing all the OpenGL drivers. Time to break out the wrist strap, then.

hmm... however, i think this is clearly a case of 'this sucks', whichever way you look at it. :)

This reminds me of a situation I had when I first started dumping SDRAM cards in my G3. Unbeknownst to me, it never occurred that the RAM cards from different manufacturers had to "play nice" together. Do you experience problems only with Quake3Arena, or does the computer exhibit some other quirky behavior? My problems were from different RAM cards not playing well with each other. I suspected something was VERY wrong because Mac OS X would crash often, which it never did until I put more RAM in the system. After I contacted the company I purchased the RAM from, they exchanged the RAM card and now everything works fine.

Something to consider. I know Quake3Arena can be quite the RAM HAWG.

OK, I took out the 128 chip. It was an issue with *all* q3 engine games.

Too bad the GeForce 3 drivers are so terrible. Q3 would be a lot more fun with decent FPS.

Aaarrrrrrrghhhhhhh!!
I took out the 512, put back in the 128, and Q3 STILL doesn't work! Forget it, I'm putting back the 10.1.2 GL Drivers. This, in a word, SUCKS!

Edit: On a side note, why am I an "official annoyance" ? I signed up to be an official volunteer back before Press3 was around. I didn't like what Press3 was doing, so I didn't come back for a while (as mentioned in my first post in this thread).

Who knows? You can change your title in the User CP section of this thing...
