Opening Excel file on a mounted .dmg

On Sunday I re-built my 1GHz TiBook, backing up and re-installing everything. It went quite smoothly, and is running faster as a result.

One problem has surfaced. Before the re-install, I was able to open a password protected .dmg file and launch and edit an Excel document I keep there. Now, when opening the file Excel gives this error:

"'docname.xls' cannot be accessed.
The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding. [cancel] [retry]" Retry will repeatedly display this error.

I can open other files on this .dmg, and can copy the Excel file to the desktop where it opens properly. I can also copy files into the .dmg, and can replace this Excel file without error. I created a new Excel doc on the desktop, copied it into the .dmg, and when opening this copy I get the same error.

Any idea what's going on?

OK, I think I found the problem. I had the User directory from another machine mounted on my desktop, which has the same name as the .dmg I mounted. This confuses Excel. If I disconnect the mounted volume it works fine. It seems that if the .dmg is mounted before the Connected volume Excel doesn't complain. If the .dmg is mounted after the Connected volume Excel barfs.
Wierd.

Glad you figured it out! I was going to suggest that you check the obvious (i.e. making sure that the disk image wasn't read-only :) )
