Opening files from CD-Rom

Apologies in advance if this is a really stupid question, but I've looked hard for an answer in "Help" and on this site without luck.

How do I open a file from a CD-Rom in an application such as Appleworks? When I click File/Open I find that I am able to browse any folders that are on the desktop, but not the CD-Rom drive. I've been forced to get round this by copying files off the CD-Rom onto the hard-disk before opening, not very efficient.

<s>Well, I havn't had to do this before (not had my mac long) but I belive that you go to desktop, then double click on the CD, as it will show up as mounted on the desktop.</s>

I was wrong, actually, you scroll all the way to the left, and choose CD instead of Macintosh HD (or whatever you call your disk)
