What version of Mac OS X and iPhoto are you using? Does this happen for any pic you try to open in the iPhoto Library? Is it possible to take a screen shot of this issue? If you press Shift + Command + 4 a cross-hair will appear and you can drag over the area you want to capture and then just release the mouse to have the screenshot appear as a file on your Desktop called Picture 1.png for example. Then you can attach it to your reply here.

i am using os 10.5.3 and iphoto 7.1.3. attached is png. of what happens./Users/dickself/Desktop/Picture 1.pngPicture 1.png
e-mail at work is richard .l.self@lmco.com

Tracey-- i trashed the finder and iphoto prefs-did restart and no go- it seems that only a few differant photos break apart-- i'm thinking they may be corrupted? your thoughts?
this may be just a freak thing i hope!

These photos that are not loading properly, where are they stored? In the iPhoto Library Folder in Pictures? If you Ctrl/Right-Click the image in the Library window and select "Show File" and then when the Finder window opens to reveal it, double-click on the original, which should open in Preview. Let me know if it still appears as it did in your screenshot.

I had this sort of thing happen to some photos I took with a Sony camera. I tracked it down (I think) to a incompatible Memory Stick in the camera. I borrowed a large capacity MS and some photos split. I could recover some photos by dragging them from the camera to the desktop without opening iPhoto and then opening iPhoto and dragging them into the window. Most photos were fine, about 1 in 10 corrupted.

I assume that it was the Memory Stick as Sony show it as incompatible with my camera on a list I have since found. And, all has been 100% OK in the six months since I went back to the original 128Mb Stick.
