OS 8.6 -> 9 then X

A friend of mine is running OS 8.6 on his G3 400. I want him to install OS X. He'll need to keep pre-OS X just in case. Am I right that he should update 8.6 to 9 before installing OS X? It seems that OS 9 already accomodates a dual boot with it's folder setup. If he does update 8.6 to 9, is it possible some software of his will have problems? I don't know much about pre-X.

So then, is installing OS X as a dual boot situation simply a matter of doing a normal install of OS X? Anything that could screw with the OS 9 install?

Thanks.

The B&W G3s needed some firmware updates (many of them required just to move from 8.6 to 9). The Mac OS 9 CD has some, but you should check Apple's site for others.

It's been a few years, but I think upgrading to 9 is a one way trip on those systems. They wouldn't work under 8.6 after the updates.

Once up to 9.x.x (yes, 9.2.x would be best for Mac OS X), Mac OS X should install just fine on that system for a dual boot system. Pre-9.1 systems can't see Mac OS X in the Startup Disk control panel that comes with them (I have 9.0.4 on a system for emergency purposes, and have to boot into, or use the control panel from, 9.2.1 to get back to Mac OS X). Plus 9.2.1/9.2.2 are the best versions for Classic in Mac OS X.

Hope that helps.

That helps a lot, thanks. Should I be concerned about any of his current software in 8.6 not working in 9.2? He does a lot of audio stuff.

I didn't have too much of a problem moving (unexpectedly, I might add) from 8.6 to 9.0.4. I believe (and it has been a while) that SoundEdit 16 (v2.0) moved without incident. That is the only classic audio app that I have.

The only system I have that has 9 on it is always in Mac OS X. I still use a 7100 (w/G3/266 upgrade) running 8.6 for all my older apps. The one problem I had was that SoftwareFPU didn't run in 9, so some of my older 68k apps still needed 8.6 to run. I think that is an extreme case though. Also ATM Deluxe needed to be upgraded from 4.5 or earlier to 4.6 (free download last time I checked). Everything else worked seemed to work fine.

I've never seen much of a problem upgrading to newer versions of the Mac OS that doesn't run on BSD, except for old programs that typically require some sort of 68K setup to work.
