OS X 10.0 to 10.1

I'm an OSX newbie here, so sorry for the dumb question.

I have a store-bought OS X disk that is 10.0.0.

I can't seem to find out how to get it to 10.1, which all the updaters at apple.com seem to want me to be at (at least) for any update to 'take'.

Make sense?

Yup. Mac OS X 10.1 is a free update. You can get a FREE 10.1 update CD from any Apple Store, and most Apple resellers. Or, if you live far away from any place with a Mac Store, you can order the update CD for $20 from Apple's Web Site, and it's sent to you.

if you go to an apple store, be sure to bring your proof of purshase thingies that came with your copy of 10.0
 
It's been awhile, about 6 months, since 10.1 update CD has been generally available. You might find one at an Apple shop somewhere if you ask for it, update for 10.1 should still be free, as long as you're not asking Apple to mail it to you! But update CD, (sorry, no download) will only update from already installed 10.0.x If you have to reinstall OSX for any reason, then 10.0 has to be reinstalled, then update again to 10.1. Some one figured out how to patch the update CD to do clean install, but 10.2 is coming before end of summer. That's going to be some form of paid update, too. Consider waiting til then and springing for full install. I hear it will be worth it, especially for you going from 10.0 :D

that is the price for the install CD, not the upgrade CD. If you already have 10.0, which you do, then go to ebay.com and search "mac os 10.1 upgrade" and you'll find them relatively cheap.
 
btw, this is ONE instance where nobody would blame you for getting it off of Limewire/Hotline/Carracho as you were entitled to a free upgrade by buying the original 10.0. But it should be REALLY easy to go to some form of Apple dealer, show him the box and ask for an upgrade CD. As she/he knows you're entitled for the upgrade, he might just give it to you. For a small fee like 10$ he might also demonstrate the cd-burning features of a new PowerMac for you - and burn you a copy of the Mac OS X Install CD that comes with it. Just apply your charms.
