OS X 10.5 not recognizing external drive

Leopard isn't detecting my external drives. They were working for a long while before but since have decided not to show up in the OS. They are firewire 400 and 800 drives connected directly to the macbook pro. They are not showing up in the disk utility. How can I get these back onto the Operating System?
 
I would try unplugging an re-plugging the drives one at a time. If that doesn't work, restart your computer then plug the drives back in.
 
FWIW, you could also try connecting via USB 2.0 to see if they are recognised then re-try the Firewire connection again.

Restarting your Mac then when the OS is fully loaded, connecting the drive/s and turning them on is a good first step troubleshooting tip.
