OS X Install Disc Content

I recently added a brand new hard drive but realized I could only find the first original install disc. Is there any way to do the custom installation and bypass the second disc completely?
 
What version of Mac OS X are we talking about? I think the last time it came the retail version came on two discs was Jaguar. Panther was on three and Tiger started the reign of Install DVDs. If you're talking about a gray disc that came with your Mac, the first is the Mac OS X Install disc and I think the second contains other applications, like iLife.
 
You may try a Custom install (the custom button will appear after you choose the hard drive destination), and unselect the software bundle.
 
Depends if it's DVD or CD. I Think generally if it's a DVD, then the whole system is on one DVD. However, if it is on a CD then it's spread across two.
