OS X Mail Application Lost Mail & 1Acc't can't get mail

I have a G4/400 with OS 10.2.6 and was running Virtual PC 5.04 when I experienced a program and had to force shutdown of VPC and locked OS X. Had to restarted with reset. When checked my mail all the inbox mail was gone and the detelted files all emptied. I have 2 acc'ts one on my server POP and the other on another server. The account of the 2nd server was removed during the crash and had to re- add to email account, now I get a message the server cannot process my connection. Yet I was able to go into Outlook Express and Netscape and check the mail. Any suggestions as to what may be going on?

My boss just installed the july security update, then restarted, and was using Word to read a document he created. The document than said it was in use by someone else, which it couldn't be, so he restarted again and his Mail.app inbox was empty but all folders were intacted. He lost 2 months of mail and no one knows what happened or how. So i'm wondering if this isn't an Apple bug?! And if so what is the cause and how can we prevent it?

I should note that all my other folders were in tact just the inbox and Trash Folder and loss of 1 my accounts.
