I am trying to send mail thru .mac (smtp.mac.com), the message I receive is "Cannot send message using server smtp.mac.com. Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings." The only server is smtp.mac.com on the list.
I deleted the com.apple.mail.plist in my username and setup the preferences again. No effect.
I tried to set NONE in the Out going mail server setup in the preferences, but it always resets to password. I also confirmed the the user and pass are correct.
I check with another mail program that port 25 is open with the ISP and I can send messages in that program.
12/16 update:
I added to Mac Mail SMTP Earthlink and Foothill Wireless ISP. I am able to send using either of these. Not I cannot send using .mac.
