OS X Question

I have a rather general question.
Whenever I open my Macintosh HD window, the window is arranged very messy.
Since I prefer the column view, I change the view and then without doing anything else, I close the window.
As I understand, this should be fixed as the default now.

If I log out and log in again, I see the same messy window when I open Macintosh HD. I have had this problem since I bought my macintosh.
Strange thing is that I do not have this problem with my second harddisk.

What should I do to fix this problem?

Thanks,

I don't know, but... have you tried to set the finder's preferences to always open new windows in column view?

Thanks,

The preferences file that contains your windows settings has got corrupted. No big deal...the .ds_store file is the culprit. You're gonna have to delete them on the system. Open the terminal and type - or copy and paste like I do (mind you, this is from the apple knowledge base)...

sudo find / -name .DS_Store -exec /bin/rm {} \;

that'll delete all the .ds_store files on your system (they're recreated when you open a folder, etc.). It'll ask you for your password. Do that, reboot, and whenever you set your folder view, it'll stick. Same thing happened to me with 10.1.5....think it's a common problem.

Oh....but if you type it in, i'll just throw in my disclaimer, that I'm not responsible for any damage caused by your system or files. *l*

I just keep that command in my stickies, so I have quick access to it.

Am I supposed to type exactly as shown?

Do I need to replace -name by something else?

Thanks again,

It's works now!
I should have asked earlier....

I had just bought my qs933...and this kept happening to me. I thought either the system was defective, the os was screwed up, or I was just going mad.

Then I read this same prob. on the apple support forums...and low and behold, it worked!

No prob man....but if you install things like Logitech's mouse drive that puts itself in the system prefs, that .ds_store file gets screwed up....so you have to do that terminal command (or if you uninstall things from the sys prefs - in my experience).

This doesn't seem to happen in Jaguar so um.....you know.....bling bling! *l*

I never thought about searching apple.com.
I just thought that I was doing something wrong...

As for Jaguar... I am quite pissed that Apple is not offering an upgrade option.
I bought my Mac just one and half month before the release.
I researched this site before and I was aware of Jaguar coming up soon and new PowerMac4 were coming out...
But then, apple rebate together with the Amazon.com certificate was a pretty good deal... so I went ahead.. with the idea that apple will surely offer some upgrade option... (You know, the package comes with some upgrade coupons..)
the worst thing is that they made ical only for 10.2... WTF...
They are forcing us to switch again!?

I hear that they now have 10.2.1... I might as well wait until they have 10.3....
