Os X Server 10.2.8, Can't Create New Shares

I'm running Mac OS X Server 10.2.8 on a dual 1 GHz Xserve with two internal 120 GB Apple "smart" hard drives (the ones the system can monitor).

I haven't made any recent configuration changes, but suddenly I am unable to create new AFP/SMB shares, either at the console or remotely via Workgroup Manager (WM). If I create a new folder, I can see that folder via WM, and I can enable "Share this item and its contents." But if I click the protocols tab, all of the options are checked and dimmed out (i.e., I can't change them).

Moreover, after clicking the Save button, if I then click on another folder then click back on the first one, the "Share this item" check box is no longer checked. The folder never appears in the list of shares in WM, and it cannot be accessed remotely via OS X's Connect to Server command.

Existing shares work normally--I can change privileges, group memberships, delete user accounts and create new ones, etc., I just can't create new shares.

The only incident of note since I was last able to create new shares was the server stopped responding to connection requests. Users would try to connect to the server, and they wouldn't even get the login dialog--the beach ball would just spin. I remotely stopped file sharing services, restarted the server, then restarted file sharing, and the users were again able to connect to the server and log in.

A couple of months passed before I tried to create a new share and was unable to do so (as per the details provided above). I thought it might be a space issue (I'm down to 8 GB of free space on the 120 GB volume I'm using for file sharing), but I'm also unable to share new folders on the boot volume (which has tons of free space). I don't know of any restrictions that could account for this problem.

Needless to say, this has me hamstrung.

Bump.

A google search on this EXACT same problem led me here, so I registered just to see if anyone knows what to kick for this situation.

Anyone?

Well, here's a heck of a thing.

Log into Workgroup Manager as the short name, not the long name, and I can make a new sharepoint. As in, user of admin, not administrator.

Maybe someday this record will solve someone else's problem.
