I have an Ibook G3 600 (16VRAM) OS Tiger
The CD DRive quit working a few weeks ago, and I need to do a re-install of OS Tiger, I have the 4 CD install version, and I dont have another mac to do Target disk mode. I do have a 5GB Ipod, if it is possible to do a install that way using the 4 CD set, I dont have the DVD of OS Tiger. I dont even have a dvd drive.

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can install tiger on my Ibook.

I use a program on my desktop windows PC, it is called ISOBUSTER, to make backup images of the CD set, just incase I lost them or they got scratched, I had a windows 98 emachine restore disk get scratched once and I never made a backup, I had to install windows 98 from a retail cd many times after that, lol windows.

So to answer you, I do have the backups on my windows pc which I can connect to from my mac through my router.

I'm not sure if you want to pay a little money here, or if this will even work, but there may be a solution where you can get that CD drive in your PC working on both your Mac and PC by turning it into an external CD drive. You can buy a cheap enclosure for that purpose, and it will turn the CD drive in the PC into an external USB (or FireWire) drive. The enclosures aren't very expensive, and it may be well worth the cost to have a drive that both computers can utilize, when necessary.

To others:
Will this even work with his iBook? Can he plug in the external USB drive and use it to boot into the OS X install DVD? If so, he can use the external drive on both the Mac and PC until he gets his iBook CD drive replaced, or...forever.

I'm not sure how much luck you'll have booting off USB, but you should have no problems booting off a firewire device. You could buy an enclosure, but if the drive is going in your iBook, you might as well buy an external drive. As always, do your homework, but here's the cheapest external firewire drive on newegg:

not sure how well that'll work with OS X.
You could also get a firewire enclosure, but you'll have to take the drive out of your PC, and the enclosure will be useless when you don't have that drive in there;

Thanks for the links, I do have another 30GB ibook drive I could use that with.

Here is what I found, I have a 1st Gen Ipod 5GB direct 6 Pin firewire port on it, and I have a cable to connect it directly to my ibook, I read guides online on doing an install using the ipod, but they only explain how to do the install using the OS Tiger DVD, I have the 4 cd set, I dont know if the installer will look on the ipod for the other CD's, I know, pressing Alt/option after the chimes upon turning on the mac, I will get to the boot menu, according to the guide I can boot from a usb or fire wire drive. I dont want to start the install and then get stuck at the "insert CD 2" part of the install. Ending up with a unusable ibook until I can put in a new drive.

I now it can be a hassle putting in a new drive, I had to on my older ibook 500MHz G3, It took my an hour to get it done, but i used a guide from www.ifixit.com which helped me alot. that ibook was my first mac. Plus, I dont have a replacement drive right now to put in my Ibook 600.

Thanks again for the links.

Installing on the iPod _only_ works if you can read the CD or DVD on the Mac, i.e. it's "just another harddrive" to the installer. This most certainly will _not_ solve your problem. You need a CD or DVD drive you can boot from on the iBook.

I want to know if it is possible to make my 4 cd set,( which I backed up to my desktop PC as iso images which are bootable on my mac) and put them together to make a single bootable image on my ipod, I read online that it has been done successfuly with the OS Tiger DVD, but I cant seem to find a guide on how to do it with the CD set. I dont want to do the re-install until I know it will work. IF it is not possible to combine the images, is there a way to make the installer look for the rest of my CDs on my ipod, and not the cd drive?

Thanks again for the help
