OS X Won't Go

Hi there, I have not used OS X before but I changed my start up disc over to the OS X folder today to give it a try.

It loaded ok but now I get a window labeled "Assistants" with the instructions "please select an assistant and click open" but there are no assistants in the list.

None of the menu items work, not even shutdown or restart and if I quit the application it just reloads.

How do I get into the computer or better yet, get back to Mac OS 9 so I can access my files again?

Sounds like a Mac that sold before OS X was the default startup. that means that OSX needs to be setup (one of the assistants is tryng to run at first startup, You've probably moved or deleted that assistant, if OSX has not been setup, then just put a OSX setup cd in drive and reboot with the C key held down, should boot to the CD, you should then run the OSX setup to reinstall OSX, Once reinstalled, then the initial user setup should complete OK, (upgrade to 10.2 or greater, your's is probably older) Have fun!
 
Or, If you need to get into OS 9 than put in the OS 9 CD and Restart by holding down the on button and than (as the computer starts up) hold down the C key. When the computer starts up go to the Swich Disc utility and swich back to OS 9, then restart the computer (don't hold down the C key). Thats it it should work. :D

PS: The same thing has happend to me, I had Mac OS 10.0. I have heard that this verson of 10 is a preview verson. If your using X.0 than stop and upgrade to 10.1. Good Luck :rolleyes:
 
An easier way to change between systems is holding down the alt key on startup. Then you can select which system to start from via a graphical user interface before the computer has booted :)

Yeah, that's true but only if you have OS X on a separate partition (or device like a CD). Hopefully Apple will make it eventually possible to choose at boot time on the same partition...
