OS10.2 won't install on eMac

I recently purchased an eMac with the hard drive wiped. I have OS10.2 installation discs but can't install.
When the computer is switched on there is an alternating question mark and smiley face (alternating on about a two second cycle).
Nothing happened when I inserted installation disc 1 - no disc icon appeared, or anything else. I tried restarting the computer (by switching the power off and on again), with the disc in the drive and with the C button pressed. Still nothing.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
 
Are these the generic 10.2 CD's or the Computer Specific ones (grey disc)?

Do you know which eMac you have or wether the Mac OS 10.2 CD's are normal CD's or DVD's?
 
If it is a later eMac it might require either 10.3 or 10.4 to boot. The 2005 model requires 10.4 or.5.
