OS9 Adobe progs in OSX 10.4.6

I'm currently running OSX 10.4.6 and classic as OS 9.2.2 on my 400mhz PowerPC G4 mac with 704mb ram and use a Wacom intuos 2 tablet.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what would be the cause of slow cursor movement in Photoshop Elements 1.0 and jerky, random brushstrokes (after a small amount of ok use) in Illustrator 8.0.1 when using through classic in OSX 10.4.6 ? both work totally fine if I boot up in OS9.2.2

Software incompatibility?

I've downloaded the latest Illustrator CS2 demo and that works fine:) .

If anyone needs more info let me know - I've basically excepted I need to upgrade but still wondering what is causing this?

A jerky cursor is not a sign of software impatiblity. If your app runs in Classic, then you have unimpeachable evidence of compatibility. The thing that you have to understand about Classic is that it is MacOS 9 running as an application under MacOS X. This means that its memory is controlled by MacOS X, which loves free hard drive space for virtual memory. I am betting that you have limited RAM and limited free space on your hard drive. Your MacOS 9 app is trying to run out of MacOS X's virtual memory space on a space-limited hard drive. You can expect "odd" behavior in this situation. The app works fine when you boot into MacOS 9 because you have substantial control over the RAM and virtual memory used by your app. Also, when you boot into MacOS 9, MacOS X memory requirements are completely out of the equation.

Aha! so now that I have deleted a whole load of files and folders from my hard drive this problem may be much less apparent (yes I did have a very full hard drive!) ... will check it out and let you know :) Thanks!

Hmmm, ok, no change... I have 5.3Gig free on the hd I have OSX 10.4.6 installed on, and 8.5Gig free on a partition of my other hd I have OS 9.2.2 installed on (surely this is enough space not to effect performance??). I've heard about 'scratch disks' and the set-up of them effecting performance of progs like illustrator - is there something I could do with that to help?? Any further ideas or advice would be cool:)

Forget about the free space on your non-boot volume. The rule of thumb is to have 10% free space on your boot volume. You might also want to see how much RAM is allocated to Illustrator.

The HD I have OSX on is 10Gig (original that came with the Mac) so I have slightly more than 50% free. Illustrator 8.0.1 has min 150mb and preferred 237mb (is loaded on same volume as OS 9 - not boot volume - if that makes any difference??)
