I've found a python script that can do music file transfers to the iPod Shuffle with no need for iTunes.
It was for OSX and Windows only but I have made changes so it also works with OS9.
Basically once the iPod Shuffle mounts you just drag your music files onto it and then run a small program from the root folder of the Shuffle which updates the Shuffles database file.
It might be useful for an old imac or whatever with not much memory running OS9.
