OSX 10.0.4 Apps

My daughter likes TuxPaint and I play mpg/avi on VLC. I should be ok.

One more thing:

I currently have a cdr and was wondering if there is a way to pull it out and put in a dvd player?

Weird question:

Will Tiger run on the G3 500 with 648mb of RAM? Better yet, will it be usable?

I've got Tiger running on a G3 700mhz, with 640mb ram. it runs very happily. all tiger really wants is ram, more that 512mb and it's happy. i would say the only real limitations of a slow mac are video playback and encoding. playback of more complex codecs or high resolution video bottoms out on anything less than about 1ghz.

In regard to buying a used box; someone gave me the ibook, so really all i would be purchasing is ram and the drive. If I could get a used iBook with all that already for what appears to be $200, then I would. However, I doubt I would get that lucky. I've been watching some videos with vlc and with only 128/panther I do pretty well with only a little choppiness when there are waves, lots of plants or intense movement/action sequences. I'm figuring the ram upgrade will make a sizable difference.

Well, maybe, but I _do_ remember the G3s being quite choppy with DivX/XviD movies - even with 640 MB RAM (and I was using a 800 MHz machine).

...that is very disconserting news. Hm... I'll check around for a G4, just to get some ideas. I would have to sell the G3 first though; money, being what it is. Thanks for the heads up.

Yikes, they are pretty high. I will just get the ram next week and see whats what. I already have a linux laptop that I use for movies so... The iBook is still a really nice machine. Its so solid and stable the addition of Unix is like a cherry on top. Better really, but...

Thanks.

Question:
I am new to OSX, being a linux guy, but I do like it. However, it sometimes seems like it could use a few "tweaks" to help overall performance, the system is different from what I am used and I am not sure where to begin. Any suggestions?
