I have a PowerPC G4.

OSX 10.4.11 is updated yet the finder crashes upon start up, requiring a restart by holding down the power button. Ran Disk Utility which reports no problems.

I am sure the two are related. . . Mail often crashes. For the past few days I noticed I am not receiving any mail however I am able to send mail. The Connection Doctor says everything is fine.

I have been searching to no avail to find the solution.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Did you just verify or repair the disk permissions? Verify doesn't change or do anything.
When do the other applications typically crash? When in heavy use, randomly, specific times...?
How much empty space do you have on your hard drive? (x GB out of how many GB) One of the reasons of applications crashing could be insufficient space. Others could be permissions related, or RAM or other hardware... the hard drive space is definitely the fastest to verify. There should be at least 15 % of free space.

Hm.. plenty of space = good. So at least not running out of space.
Do you have more than one user? If, test if the crashes happen for others too. If there isn't another user you can easily create one from system preferences (it can be later deleted). Especially with Finder.

Try Giaguara's suggestion of creating a new user account, then logging in under that new user account and performing some actions that previously caused a crash.

Does the system still crash under the new user account?

If not, then the problem likely exists in some corrupt preference file or incompatible login item or something that is limited to your original user account.

If so, then the problem likely exists in something system-wide -- perhaps a rogue kernel extension or some botched upgrade or something.

You can also try re-applying the 10.4.11 Combo updater -- some people report success with this method.
