OSX 10.5.8 Freezing Intermittently

this has been happening since before the newest update.
this is my imac:

2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB of ram
model identifier: iMac9,1

bought it in may of this year, brand new from the apple store. the problem I'm having is that it freezes a lot. not for a long time, maybe only half a second. but this isn't acceptable to me for such an expensive piece of equipment. it's VERY annoying to be photo editing or working on music recording and have it freeze for a split second every 30 seconds or so. it's strange. I have windows 7 on here and it never happens. runs smooth as silk. I would just run that if I didn't run pro tools, but I do, and pro tools runs poorly on windows.

I've read a few things about resetting the pram, but all the threads that had issues made it sound like it froze for like a minute, not for a second like mine. it freezes as if it's a computer from 1998. like it's trying to catch up to what I'm doing. at first I thought it was a firefox issue, but it happens in every program I noticed after some testing.

If you bought it new is it still under warranty?

However, goeth thou to Console and post what happens during the next freeze. The Gurus may be able to tell you what is the exact problem--what is causing the freeze.

this is what happened between it being find and freezing.

9/8/09 1:40:20 AM Terminal[529] applyWindowPositioning Top-Stretch
9/8/09 1:40:20 AM Terminal[529] updatePinButton
9/8/09 1:40:22 AM Terminal[529] resignKey NSConcreteNotification 0x119f10 {name = NSWindowDidResignKeyNotification; object = <TTWindow: 0x15c610>}
9/8/09 1:40:22 AM Terminal[529] resignMain NSConcreteNotification 0x119f10 {name = NSWindowDidResignMainNotification; object = <TTWindow: 0x15c610>}

oh no.
i reset the pram. it's waaay worse now. yikes! what have I done?!

I really think it's graphics related. stacks and coverflow are choppy as heck. this isn't how it should be, correct? I mean, why would they have such a feature if it was choppy
I'm seeing that it freezes when I coverflow a folder that hasn't been cover flowed yet. gives me the windmill for a long time. is this normal? I've never had problems with an OS before - are windows machines just faster, or is something wrong here?

First things first . . . you have backed up your data, yes? If not, do so. Always a good idea.

Second, search HERE for how to use the Hardware Test of your Installation Disks--I have not had to do it, but it is not difficult. See if you have a HD problem.

A Guru may be able to sort out the rest.
