OSX :: CDs won't mount

Hi there.

I just updated from 10.4.3 to 10.4.4 hoping that this was one of the fixes...it's not.

CDs (mostly music CDs) won't mount. Sometimes I hear them "spin up." Sometimes not, but they usually do.

They don't appear on the desktop. I thought that a glitch may make them visible only in iTunes. That's not the case, either.

Any suggestions?

Oh, I read a forum a couple of weeks ago, that suggested logging out and back in, but as a "fake" user. That doesn't work either.

HELP! I can't listen to my Cyndi Lauper CD!

Hey there. If you go into "System Preferences" -> (Hardware) "CDs & DVDs", check what actions are set for when you insert a cd or dvd and choose what you would like to happen when you do from the drop down boxes.

See if this helps, if not report back.

NIXGEEK,

Hmmm. By system, do you mean OS? It's 10.4.4.

The Machine is a Dual 867 MHz PowerPC G4; 1 MB L3 cache per processor.

Does that help? I just looked up "firmware" for MAX OSX on versiontracker.com and it listed different firmware updates for different things...like Bluetooth, powerbook, etc....

Frustrated as heck. Yikes!

I already figured the OS version since you mentioned it. I was referring to the hardware and thank you for providing that. :D

The best place to check for firmware updates is Apple. As much as their Support section is a pain, that's the best place to go to find the correct firmware update for your Mac. They even have a chart of which firmware is for which Mac.

From the looks of it, I'd say your golden on firmware updates.

Have you tried redoing the update by manually downloading the Combo Updater? Personally I don't like using the Software Update to upgrade my OS (call it paranoia, but better safe than sorry :D). The nice thing about the Combo Updater is that it will upgrade you from whatever version you are running to the latest version without doing them sequentially (10.4.x-->10.4.4, 10.3.x-->10.3.9, etc.). Of course, you might have to do an Archive and Install to start over, but you won't lose your programs if you perform this installation.

The other solution is to try using PatchBurn and see if your optical drive starts working like it used to.
