OSX corrupt HD/non appearing volume

Hey Everyone.

I just got a set of mac os x Panther 10.3 upgrade disks...they are CD format and I will be installing them on a Power PC G4 eMac with 512mb RAM. So I had that problem on startup when a question mark comes up on a gray screen and pressing X didnt work because it somehow lost the OS X 10.2 filesystem...after booting from the first upgrade disk I get to the part where I must select an install volume ...although there is no disk in the disk viewer and the disk utility cant find my hard drive to fix it...I tried to press Apple Key + S to run some command line repair mode that I read about but that didnt work either....I have no idea how to repair the hard disk when the disk utility cant even find it..any advice?

I would appreciate any help on this problem. Disk Utility doesnt recognize any Hard Drive on the system...what can I do?
