osx not loading!!

I had a problem with my emac-when I turned it on I just got a flashing question mark and an os9 logo.

This was because I had got rid of my os9 system folder [I was doing this to free up space on my HD-it was a tip on the apple website!!].

To remedy this I reinstalled osx software, now when I log in I get the user name/password screen, then it just loads up the console. I get a black screen, and in white type it says something like..... darwin paul c/, and thats about it.

I've tried typing in exit, run, close etc. And nothing happens, when I type in a line and press enter, its response is 'user.' so I type in my user, then 'password.' comes up, this when my keyboard won't respond to any button, apart from enter. When I press enter it just comes back at me with incorrect password, and asks for user ID again.

What on earth has happened.....PLEASE HELP!!!!

When you say you "reinstalled OSX" did you do an erase and install or was it over the top of current installation?

Sounds like it can't find any system folder to startup from :(

Thanks for quick response.

I reinstalled last night. I chose to archive and install. This should have created a folder of the previous system for me.

Would not entering correct user name/password a few times have anything to do with it?[it took me a few times to remember, as has been a while since I've had it set to ask for these on loading]

Also thought it could be that my HD is dismounted? one of the first things I did was to repair disk and think I ejected the HD at the same time.

Any other thoughts?

Have you tried the following:
At startup press and hold the Option key

This should give you the option to select a startup volume whether it's a cd internal/external HD.

yeah gave that one a shot, i chose the HD obviously.....this is what led me to the signing on issue.

is worth going through the software restore discs?
 
Yeah sounds like a good idea.
Is there anyway that you could do an erase and install?:o
Or was there a reason you did an archive and install?

If you could start a fresh that would be the best option :)
As I'm not sure that I would trust the machine reliability imho.
 
try this:- put install cd and hold c down when booting up. If it boots up
choose repair permissions and/or disk. then choose startup disk and reboot.
 
hennessymac, cheers for the signing on tip.....I reset password last night, but wasnt for any user. is that an option, and should that help solve my woes? and your other post-I have already repaired disk, this was before I reinstalled osx....repeating this should help?

I repaired disk before I reinstalled osx....so should be able to get into it again.....this is disk utility etc right?......

what your suggesting is to reboot the startup disk....cool......what does this do then and should it solve my woes.

also is resetting password for any user an option.....and should this be tried after trying the first thing?....

I'm sorted now, running software updates as I speak!!:-)

Seeing as I archived and installed when I reinstalled osx, its created a huge file on my HD 'previous system'......do I need to keep this? or can I bin it?

The only reason that I would do an archive and install in the first place is to keep certain files but then I would take a backup of it in the first place.
As you say it just leaves a shite load of stuff that you don't particularly need if you've got a backup of files etc..
Whenever I do an install I ALWAYS do an erase and install. Nice and fresh no cr*p left on it.

By the way how did you get it to login and startup in the first place?

I changed the password on my user....posibly didn't like me from before for deleting os9!! but it just logged in after that.

So from what you said its sounds like I could get rid of that previous system folder?

I do have another small problem now......I've set my itunes to read the music from the folder where all my music is stored......but my itunes library is still empty. I tried dropping the folder into itunes, but it just gave me a message saying not enough room on hard drive, itunes will copy what it can......I dont want to make another copy of my music [theres 22 gig of the stuff!!!] I just want my library in itunes to be a directory of my music!!!

why cant I do this? I'm sure its how it was before!!
 
Well if it's saying your HD is full then chances are that's your problem ;)

Do an Apple+I on your HD icon on your desktop to determine how much space is left or not :)

The system folder can be deleted if theres nothing in there that you need.
That would free up some space.

Not to much experience of iTunes. Perhaps there is a setting in the preferences of iTunes to point to a folder not sure :o
 
Ahhhh within iTunes there is an "Add to Library" in the File menu. Try doing that and pointing it to where you have stored all your music.

yeah I have about 4 gig spare..... my music is 21.4 gig. I'm hoping that it doesnt have to copy it all!!

in itunes preferences, I have already pointed i tunes in the direction of my music......I'm thinking [hoping] that by clicking 'add to library,' it should help me achieve what I'm after. Thankyou
 
I would of thought that it would let you choose what you want to transfer.
Sounds like you need to get yourself a new HD to store more data on ;)
By getting riid of that old system folder would free up even more space.
Do an Apple+I on the archived system folder and see how much space it's taking up.
