OSX on tray load imac

hi,
i have an old tray loading imac running OS 8.6 and I want to upgrade to OS X - does anyone know if this is possible? I understand that i would need to install a firmware update but it seems that this will only work on a 'newer' slot loading machine (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130)

I would greatly appreciate any help you can give

My understanding is the maximum you'll be able to go is 10.3.9 (the last revision of Panther).

thanks, any idea what the minimum system requirements are for adsl broadband on my machine? I'm as bit clueless on this - I only have the built in 56k modem - will i need to upgrade?

If you have the right service, your computer sees only the Ethernet connection to your modem. Most Macs have had Ethernet built-in for more than a decade. This is simply not a concern.
